Game # 33 Lindsay Muskies 2 - Peterborough Stars 3
December 22nd, 2007 in Peterborough
Summary
Like the other games between these teams this season, this was another close one. The Muskies fell behind by two, then got back level, only to see the Stars score what turned out to be the gamewinning goal. All the goals in this one came on powerplays as referee Lewis was kept busy with his whistle. In the end, though, it was two more points lost for the Muskies, who matched up quite well against the third placed team - but there are no points for just matching up well. The Muskies will certainly welcome the Christmas break as they try and shake off the injuries and flu bug that didn't help this afternoon. The next game isn't until January 4th but it will be a big one as it the first of four remaining games against the Quinte West Pack that will go along way towards deciding the playoff picture this season.
Period 1
The Muskies found themselves up against it in the first period. They cancelled their hosts out quite well five on five but found it difficult to muster much of a threat of their own. As a result, much of the play was in the Lindsay zone and this inevitably led to penalties. It was two minors in fifteen seconds that was their undoing as the long two man advantage led to Matt Gray yet again scoring against the team whose sweater he used to wear. It came at 8:26. Not long after, an apparent high stick that went unpunished produced a little too much criticism from the Lindsay bench and Dave Lewis called a bench minor. This time it was Corey O'Brien who got the powerplay goal at 15:04 as he picked off a rebound at the top of the crease. It left the Fish with a two goal deficit to reclaim if they were to get anything from this one.
Period 2
The second period was much better by Lindsay as they served notice that they weren't prepared to lay down and roll over. This time it was Peterborough who took too many penalties. When the Stars took two minors close together, coach Meyers immediately called a timeout. Whatever he said, it worked a treat because nine seconds later the puck was in the net. Alex Fiset it was who got on the end of a cross ice pass from Kyle Stojsin at 2:52, with Alex Charette getting the other assist. The Fish then drew level when Kevin George, helped by Brett Waters, scored on another powerplay at 9:10. But it didnt all go Lindsay's way with Pier-Olivier Cotnoir beating Nerland from close in at 15:03 to give the Stars the lead back. It was, of course, another powerplay goal. But the Muskies had shown they could compete.
Period 3
The Muskies tried hard in the final period but they weren't helped by the injured Kyle Stojsin having to sit and watch from the bleachers. They did have some good chances, especially when they were handed another lengthy two man advantage. They could do no better than hit the crossbar, though, and in the end they had to head home for the holidays without any additional points.
