Game # 30
Peterborough Stars 3 - Lindsay Muskies 2
December 14th, 2007 in Lindsay
Summary
Lindsay lost to Peterborough on home ice for the first time this season in a disappointing game in which the teams managed fewer than 40 shots between them. The Stars didn't impress much and were there for the taking but the Muskies just couldn't find a way to get good shots on the net. Two goals in ten seconds in the middle period turned out to be enough for the Stars, the second of which was a shorthanded effort that will have frustrated the coaching staff immensely.
Period 1
An ugly first period nevertheless saw the Muskies build up a one goal lead. It came early, at 2:03, and it was suitably ugly. A Peterborough defenceman casually passed the puck straight to Trevor Mock who couldn't believe his luck six feet from the top of the Stars' crease. Even goalie Fryia was caught out of position and so Mock had the easiest of tasks to guide the puck into the empty net. It was, of course, an unassisted goal. The Muskies did quite well for most of the rest of the period, restricting the visitors to a total of just 3 shots, but Peterborough came on stronger in the last five minutes until a penalty cost them the momentum once more.
Period 2
The second period was a bit of a disaster for Lindsay. The Stars levelled the score at only the 1:16 mark when a fairly harmless-looking shot from Matt Gray found the top corner. They then took the lead at 7:32. There was a pile of players at the post, including goalie Nerland, but the puck came loose to Doug Moore who flicked it up into the top corner. Things very quickly got even uglier when Peterborough scored immediately from the restart - just 10 seconds later. Luke McKenzie strode up the ice from the face-off and planted the puck back where it had just come from, and since the Stars had picked up a minor penalty following their second goal, it was also a shorthanded marker. The Muskies were suddenly two goals behind which must have come as quite a shock. They were working quite hard and getting chances but the vast majority of their shots went straight into the goalie's breadbasket. They did get the puck into the net once more but it didn't count. A scrum at the side of the crease saw the puck squirm across and sit on the goal-line but referee Sankey, who had a good game, happened to be on the far side and he lost sight of the puck, causing him to blow the whistle before Trevor Mock tapped it in. There weren't many complaints as it was just one of those things that happens in hockey - it just that it seems to happen to the Muskies more than any other team.
Period 3
The Muskies tries to come back in the third period and for a while looked like they might just do that. When Mitch Vasey scooped the puck past Fryia to make it 3-2 after only 3:54 (assisted by Alex Fiset and Alex Charette) there was ample reason to expect that the Fish might get something from the game. But it wasn't to be. Although the Muskies pushed ahead, they rarely actually fired the puck towards the net, and halfway through the period, the Stars, who hadn't exactly looked like a top three team, started to tighten up defensively and made things tougher for Lindsay in the final third of the ice. Pulling the goalie didn't result in either team coming close to scoring, which was probably just fine with Peterborough.
