Game # 13
Quinte West Pack 2 - Lindsay Muskies 7
October 21st, 2007 in Lindsay
Summary
This wasn't the best performance of recent weeks by the Muskies but they still comfortably beat the Quinte West Pack on their first visit to the Lindsay Rec Complex. Ryan Oliver starred up front with a hat trick of goals while Aaron Keaney and Corey George both had four point afternoons. Matt Ginn got his third start in net - and his third win. Three goals in a spell of sixty one seconds in the first period proved to be enough to put this game out of the visitors' reach. The Muskies now move two points ahead of the Pack and still have three games in hand over them.
Period 1
The Muskies started the first period well but for a while it seemed like they might suffer the old problem of not being able to convert chances into goals. But then came a Senators-like burst of scoring in the middle of the frame with three goals in barely more than a minute. First it was Ryan Oliver who got an easy powerplay chance at 5:29 to beat Jordan Tanner from close in, assisted by Kyle Stojsin and Josh Ruys. Then at 6:01 Cam Granger looked almost apologetic as he pounced on a rebound to make it 2-0, with the assists going to Corey George and Aaron Keaney. It was 3-0 just 29 seconds later when a point shot from Eric Gethers appeared to be neatly redirected in but the defenceman was given credit for the goal. Assists were given to the same pairing as for the previous goal. Quinte West then chose to replace Tanner with Shawn Sirman in net. The Fish gave the Pack a great chance to get back in it when they took overlapping minors, allowing the visitors to have 75 seconds of two man advantage. The Lindsay penaltykilling kept them at bay, however, and the Fish finished the period clear by three.
Period 2
The Muskies really didn't play very well in the second period but by the end of it they had increased their lead. For a while it looked like the players thought they had already done enough as Matt Ginn had to make some smart saves to keep Quinte West out. But today the Muskies certainly had their goalscoring skates on and at 11:15 Corey George ripped a shot past Tanner (who had returned at the start of the second period). Assists were given to Granger and Keaney.  The Muskies' first shorthanded effort of the season then made it 5-0 at 13:13. Ryan Oliver got behind the defence in neutral ice and skated in to beat Tanner with a crisp rising shot. The Pack finally beat Matt Ginn at 16:08 on a powerplay. The puck seemed to be heading behind the Lindsay goal but got caught in the side netting and William McLaughlin was right there to grab it and tuck it in at the post.  The Muskies headed to the third period with a four goal lead but hadn't been playing their best hockey.
Period 3
Any fears of a Leafs-esque collapse in the third period were put to rest 64 seconds into the final frame when Ryan Oliver neatly turned in his third goal of the game, with Derek Davis and Kyle Stojsin picking up helpers. Soon after, Ginn was beaten for the second time as Tommy Tomensky found the net at 3:03 to make it 6-2. But that was as close as the Pack would get and it was left to Cam Granger on a powerplay to wrap up the scoring as he beat Tanner for his second of the afternoon at 16:54, assisted by Keaney and George again. By that stage each team's bench was three players short after a trio of fights in a spread of only 8 seconds in the middle of the period gave a chance for a few players to take out their frustrations. Going for Lindsay were Rory Landry, Alex Charette and Jordon Sinclair, with the latter now having to sit out tomorrow's game in Cobourg as the referee lost patience and handed out an instigator to him and an aggressor to his opponent.
