Game # 10 Lindsay Muskies 2 - Wellington Dukes 4
October 12th, 2007 in Wellington
Summary
Two games ago, the Dukes blasted the Muskies 8-1 in Lindsay. Tonight the Fish restored some pride by building up a two goal lead before Wellington found the net four times in the final period. Richard Nerland turned away 48 of 52 shots, while Josh Ruys and Jordon Sinclair found the net for the Muskies. The Lindsay coaches must have been quite pleased with the team's discipline as they only picked up a total of eight minutes in penalties - and none at all in the first twenty seven minutes of the game. Next up for the Muskies is a trip to Trenton on Sunday evening to face the Qunite West Pack, who will be charged up by a shootout win in Port Hope this evening.
Period 1
The first period saw the Muskies keep their discipline as the only penalty called in the entire twenty minutes was a minor against the Dukes’ Jeremy Franklin. Richard Nerland and Jake Fischer in the nets dealt with everything sent their way, with the Muskies edging their hosts 12-11 in the shot department.
Period 2
The same couldn’t be said in the second with the Dukes firing 20 shots on Nerland while the Muskies only managed five at the other end. But at the end of the day, shots don’t win you anything unless they go in, and that’s exactly what happened to Josh Ruys’ effort at 12:24. It was a powerplay goal, with Ryan Oliver getting one of the assists (against his former team) and Cam Granger the other. Before that the Muskies had started to take some penalties but had killed off both minors before the goal. The Dukes don’t often lose in the DukeDome and they renewed their efforts, raining the shots in on Nerland but he held firm, even when Alex Charette headed to the box for a couple of minutes following a ‘roughing after the whistle’ call by referee Parliament.
Period 3
Things got really difficult for the Muskies very quickly in the third period, with Chad Jones getting an elbowing minor after just six seconds. But the Fish survived and then just thirteen seconds after the penalty ended, they doubled their lead. This time it was Jordon Sinclair who scored, assisted by Derek Davis at 2:19. But even with a two goal lead in the third period, you cannot relax against the Dukes. They stormed forward again, and kept coming at the Muskies. They finally found a way to beat Richard Nerland at 3:55 when Chris Ayotte made it 2-1. The game was tied at 7:00, with former Trenton Sting man Kyle Hawkins-Schulz getting the goal. Zach Morbeck got what would turn out to be the game winner at 11:02. The Muskies enjoyed two powerplays in the final seven minutes but couldn’t find the tying goal. The Dukes got an insurance marker at 17:27 when Corey Bureau broke in for an unassisted goal and that was that. The Muskies came close with a much better effort than the last two times these teams met and must now look to take out their frustration at losing when they face the Quinte West Pack for the first time in Trenton on Sunday.
